Burning away the cold

View on Wasserbillig

Beginning on the afternoon of the 28th of February 2004 there had been massive snow falls in Luxembourg. The weather was rather mild. The temperature was around 0 degrees. So the snow was quite wet and sticky. The temperature dropped to some minus degrees during the night and it continued snowing. Waking up the next day most people must have been caught by surprise. Had it been wet and cold for quite a while, that day a thick white layer was covering everything. Because it was Sunday most people skipped the already traditional procedure to clean their cars and stayed inside the house. For my part I was up early so I grabbed my new digital camera and went for a walk. To my suprise the snow was already melting. Standing under a tree was like standing under the shower! I had to be fast if I wanted to take some pictures.

The melting could not have had a better timing. The 29th of February was the celebration day for the end of the winter. In fact it was the first Sunday after the carneval: Buergsonndeg. The day everywhere in Luxembourg communities try to beat each other by making big fires after sunset. So at seven o'clock in the evening the last remaining snow was taken away by the flames.
